Gustavo Mohme Llona (1930-2000) was founder and director of the newspaper “La República”. Businessman, politician and journalist. He was a civil engineer by profession. In 1955, he founded the construction company "Woodman & Mohme" along with Arturo Woodman Pollit. This company lasted 25 years and built important structures in the north of the country. He was a member of the center party “Acción Popular (Popular Action).” Due to some discrepancies with the president Fernando Belaunde Terry, he founded the division “Acción Popular Socialista (Socialist Popular Action)” in 1967. In 1982 he founded the left-wing newspaper “La República” and, two years later, the tabloid “El Popular.” In 1985 and 1990 he was elected Senator for “Izquierda Unida (Left United).” His work was interrupted by the military coup in 1992, but in 1995 he returned to Congress with Javier Perez de Cuellar’s party, who was the former secretary-general of the United Nations. During this period he was a strong opponent to Alberto Fujimori’s dictatorship both in Congress and in the management of the newspaper. In the final years of the Fujimori regime, he suffered slanderous attacks through the tabloid newspapers, which were funded by the dictatorship. He died in 2000 when he had been reelected congressman. The press room in the Peruvian Congress bears his name, in recognition of his work. He had other companies: Empresa Latinoamericana de Transporte S.A.C. (transport of heavy loads), Centro Laser Angamos S.A. (cosmetics), W & M Contrat Gnrales SA Cefoisa Asoc (building construction) and Importadora y exportadora Angamos S.A. (Wholesale of household goods).

Guillermo Thorndike was one of the most important Peruvian journalists of the second half of the 20th century. He founded the newspapers: Ojo, La Crónica Libre, La República, El Popular and Página Libre. He has been involved in the editorial offices of the newspapers Correo, La Crónica, El Nacional, La Razón and the Frecuencia Latina and RBC channels. Before arriving at La República, he worked as director of El Diario de Marka (left-wing) and advised Alfonso Barrantes (Izquierda Unida) for the candidacy to the municipality of Lima. He has written thirty books, among which a few that stand out are: “El año de la barbarie (The year of barbarism),” “No, mi general (No, my general),” “La revolución imposible (The impossible revolution),” “La batalla de Lima (The battle of Lima),” “Banchero, los adolescentes y alucinantes años 60 de Chimbote (Banchero, the teenagers and the amazing 60's in Chimbote),” “Grau. 1878 crimen perfecto (Grau. The perfect crime in 1878),” “El rey de los tabloides (The King of the tabloids),” “Grau. La República caníbal (Grau. Cannibal of the Republic),” “Grau. La traición y los héroes (Grau. Betrayal and Heroes),” “Grau. Caudillo, la ley (Grau. Leader, the law),” “Grau. Los hijos de los libertadores (Grau. The children of the liberators),” “Ocupación, Testigo. La edad de plomo (Occupation, Witness. The Age of Lead),” “Gastronomía (Gastronomy)” and “Los topos: la fuga del MRTA de la prisión de Canto Grande (Spies: The MRTAs Escape from Canto Grande Prison).” He underwent some political directional changes. If he supported the left in the 1980s, in 1990 he used Página Libre as a means to catapult Alberto Fujimori’s candidacy, with support from the outgoing “Aprista” government. At the end of the 90s, he worked for Frecuencia Latina when it was under control of the Winter brothers, and affiliated with the Fujimori regime. He continued in that same line at the newspaper La Razón even when the regime had fallen.
